Slow

I just want to take it slow today. There is a languid day for me and I feel very much in the mood for some slow music. It could change in a minute but right now there is nothing stirring. It is Good Friday and no one ventures out at this time of day. A little later after lunch people will start making the rounds of the different churches and chapels in what is called "visita iglesia" which consists mostly in doing the station of the cross.

I remember it was a good way to move around the city for ostensibly a good reason but it was just a way of beating the boredom.

Oregano-laced Green Tea

The airconditioner suddenly stopped which told me that the power had gone. Looking at my watch, I saw 8:00 a.m. on the dial and I realized that electricity had really gone out and would not come back again until 5:00 p.m. so I went down and made some green tea and just for fun, I placed 3 oregano leaves. Tasted wonderful.

Why Dumaguete?

There must be some inexplicable karmic reason why I am now in Dumaguete. I know that I never dreamed or even wished to live here at all in the first place. I had only been here once in my life and I stayed in a house which was on a street that led directly to Silliman University. Then, there only pedicabs to bring you to different places and it seemed such a pity that peopele have to earn their living in such a manner. I am glad those days are gone and motorcycles have replaced human legs as the motive power of these cabs. That house where I stayed for two weeks is situated beside the house where I lived for two years, this time when I found myself being counted as one of Dumaguete's residents.

It is no wonder that I call all of these things karma. I do not know anybody here and I just sit in front of my computer and live online. While this has resulted in me losing most of my physical activities, I have gained a lot in cyber activities. I discovered blogs and websites and stuff like that. This is hardly an ideal way to live. Everyone needs exercise but I am not so inclined to get my exercise by moving my arms and legs repeatedly. I prefer to walk and I could do that but where would I go? The streets are so narrow and there is the constant danger of being hit by a motorcycle.

All about Dumaguete

In Dumaguete I have plenty of time to think about things, to do a bit of gardening. I have some grapes growing from cuttings that I bought in Cagayan de Oro when I was there a few months ago. Of course, I have quite a bit of green tea which I also got from Jessie in Cagayan de Oro. I notice that the green tea does not care too much for lots of direct sunlight, that the ones that are shaded have such big, green leaves. I suppose that I shall have to place some netting on the ones that are hit by direct sunlight for over 6 hours and all of this in the morning till mid-day.

The man who sold me the grape cuttings claimed that it would only take 8 months for the grapes to start bearing fruit. This I have got to see. It would be nice to have grapes on my back yard giving fruit because I really like grapes. I like tea too, very much and I drink a lot of it everyday. It seems that the Japanese and Chinese owe their longevity to drinking tea every day.

Dumaguete

Everything in Dumaguete is expensive, except probably the people's smiles and their time. One never fails to get a smile from the people of Dumaguete and everyone has the time to help you out with directions. They love to talk. It seems that talking is an expression of hospitality and this openness can be disconcerting at times especially when information is given on something which you absolutely don't care about. There is an explanation for everything except that which you so desperately need.
